First Steps · ages 3–5 · Mirfield
A first martial arts class that feels right for little ones.
Short, playful and structured sessions where children practise moving with control, listening, taking turns and trying something new. They can be themselves while they learn.
For parents
What if they are too little to concentrate?
They do not need to arrive able to stand still, follow every instruction or join in confidently. This age group is learning those habits. We use short activities and clear routines, with plenty of movement and an instructor close enough to help.
Some children are eager from the doorway. Others watch before they try. We encourage participation in manageable steps without making a nervous child the centre of attention. If your child needs a moment, you can stay and watch with them.
What actually happens?
Children move, balance, practise simple martial arts actions and play games with a purpose. The group works on listening, stopping when asked, sharing space and using control with a partner. We keep explanations brief and adapt the task to the children in front of us.
Clear routines and small, achievable steps help children get comfortable in a group.
Games and simple skills give them chances to practise balance, coordination and awareness.
We notice effort and growing independence, not just whether a movement looks perfect.

Common questions
Before the first visit
What if my child does not join in straight away?
That is okay. We can let them watch, give them a small role and invite them into the next activity. A first class is a chance to see the environment, not a test.
Is this the same as the older children’s class?
No. The sessions are shorter, with simpler instructions, more games and expectations suited to ages 3–5. The underlying ideas are adapted for this age group.
Do they need gloves or a uniform?
No equipment or uniform is needed for the two free classes. Comfortable clothes and a drink are enough.
Try it together
See how your child responds to a real class.
They can meet the instructor and other children while you watch. Both classes are free, with no pressure to join afterwards.
